A Janam Kundli (birth chart) is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place of your birth, drawn in the Vedic (sidereal) tradition. It shows the ascendant (Lagna) — the sign rising on the eastern horizon — and where each planet stood among the twelve signs and twenty-seven nakshatras. From these positions, classical techniques derive your dashas (planetary time periods), yogas (planetary combinations), and measures of planetary strength. This page computes everything in your browser using JPL-validated astronomy.
Lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth moment. It changes roughly every two hours, which is why birth time matters so much — a few minutes can shift the entire chart. In Vedic astrology the Lagna represents your outer personality, physical constitution, and the lens through which you meet the world, while the Moon sign describes your inner emotional nature.
The ecliptic is divided into 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions), each spanning 13°20'. Your birth nakshatra — the one the Moon occupied — determines where your Vimshottari dasha sequence begins and is considered the most personal part of the chart. Each nakshatra has a ruling planet, a deity, and qualities (gana, yoni, nadi) used in both chart reading and kundli matching.
Vimshottari dasha is a 120-year cycle of planetary periods. Each planet rules a mahadasha (major period) of fixed length — Sun 6 years, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17, Ketu 7, Venus 20. Your sequence starts from the lord of your birth nakshatra, with the first period reduced by the portion already elapsed. Each mahadasha divides further into antardashas (sub-periods) in the same planetary order. Tradition reads the running dasha as the current chapter of life.
Shadbala ("six-fold strength") is the classical system for measuring how much force a planet can exert. It combines six components: Sthana (positional strength, including exaltation and dignity), Dig (directional), Kala (temporal, including day/night and weekday), Chesta (motional, speed-based), Naisargika (natural relative strength), and Drik (strength from aspects). The total is compared against a traditional minimum — a planet above it is considered capable of delivering its full results.
Vargas re-divide each zodiac sign into finer slices to examine specific life areas. The birth chart itself is D-1; Hora (D-2) divides each sign in two for wealth, Drekkana (D-3) in three for siblings and courage, Saptamsha (D-7) in seven for children, Navamsha (D-9) in nine for marriage and inner strength, Dashamsha (D-10) in ten for career, Dwadasamsha (D-12) in twelve for parents, and Trimshamsha (D-30) in thirty for vitality and misfortunes, Vimshamsha (D-20) in twenty for spiritual life, Bhamsha (D-27) in twenty-seven for innate talents, and Shashtiamsha (D-60) in sixty for the karmic substratum. A planet's dignity in the relevant varga refines what D-1 promises.
