Like a report card across eight subjects — each subject carries a different weight, and together they make 36.
The two Moons on the zodiac wheel — in Vedic matching, the Moon's position (Rashi) is the single most important factor, because it reflects the mind and emotional nature.
Ashtakoota Milan scores eight dimensions of compatibility. Person 1 is read in the traditional bride's position and Person 2 in the groom's for the directional kootas.
North Indian style charts — the diamond at the top is the 1st house (Lagna, the ascendant). Each house shows its Rashi number and the grahas placed in it.

Sidereal longitudes (Lahiri ayanamsa) for both charts.
Mars placed in houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12 — counted from the Lagna, the Moon and Venus — flags Manglik dosha, with classical cancellation conditions applied.
The 120-year Vimshottari cycle, counted from the Moon's nakshatra — the classical clock of planetary time periods.

Methodology
Planetary positions come from a dependency-free engine implementing published analytical algorithms (Schlyter's planetary theory, Meeus sidereal time). It was validated against NASA JPL ephemerides (DE421/DE441) across 41 test dates from 1950 to 2030:
We use the Lahiri ayanamsa — the standard adopted by the Government of India's official ephemeris and used by every major panchang.
Every Guna Milan table was cross-verified against multiple canonical sources (drikpanchang-style calculators, astrosage, onlinejyotish, classical BPHS conventions). Where traditions genuinely differ, the majority Parashara convention is used and the alternative noted.
The Moon moves about 13° a day — near a nakshatra boundary, even a few minutes of birth-time error can change the result, so we flag those cases explicitly. Guna Milan is a traditional screening method, not a verdict on a marriage: which kootas matched matters more than the total, and a qualified jyotishi should review Nadi, Bhakoot and Manglik doshas before any decision.
The tradition
A short, honest primer on what Kundali Milan checks, how the 36 gunas work, and where its limits lie — so you can read your result like someone who understands it.
Every horoscope matching for shaadi starts from the same place: the Moon's nakshatra in each partner's birth chart. The Moon signifies the mind and emotional nature in Vedic astrology, so the Ashtakoota system compares the two lunar positions across eight dimensions — the kootas — awarding up to 36 gunas (points) in total.
Varna (1) — spiritual compatibility · Vashya (2) — mutual attraction and influence · Tara (3) — health and fortune through the match · Yoni (4) — physical and intimate compatibility · Graha Maitri (5) — friendship between the Moon-sign lords · Gana (6) — temperament match · Bhakoot (7) — the Moon signs' relationship to each other · Nadi (8) — the most-weighted koota, concerning health and progeny.
Tradition treats 18 gunas as the minimum; 25+ is good, 33+ excellent. But experienced astrologers weigh which kootas matched over the total: a full 8/8 Nadi and a clean Bhakoot matter more than a high score built on minor kootas. A low Yoni or Gana, for instance, describes temperament friction to be aware of — not a verdict.
Manglik (Kuja) dosha is flagged when Mars sits in houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12 from the Moon or Lagna. Classical texts list many cancellations — and when both partners are Manglik, the dosha is traditionally considered neutralised. Our report checks dosha, severity and cancellations for each person before combining them into one verdict.
Six of the eight kootas depend only on the Moon's nakshatra, which moves slowly enough that the date alone usually settles it. With “Unknown” selected, we compute from the day's mean positions and flag any koota that could flip near a boundary — so you see exactly what is certain and what isn't.
Western horoscopes use the Sun sign. Vedic matching uses the Moon sign (rashi) and birth star (nakshatra), because the Moon signifies the mind and emotional nature — the things that actually decide whether two people live well together. That is also why an accurate birth time matters: the Moon moves about 13° a day.
A low total is information, not a sentence. Look at which kootas failed: Nadi and Bhakoot carry the most weight in tradition, while Varna or Vashya rarely decide anything alone. Many families consult a jyotishi for cancellations (parihara) and a full chart reading before treating any score as final.
